Software synths have come a long way very quickly, while the costs of top self vsts are daunting to most...

the vast array (pun intended) of second tier and beta products is rife with amazing units and fx.
Many developers are offering their wares and ask for a contribution if you really like their stuff or use them in a commercial product. The number of reasons for downloading and using cracked software and getting smaller by the day.
TAL Togu Audio Line
is offering a wide range of interesting synths and fx for free. here it is kids downloading with out moral conflict... enjoy

Another interesting and free noize maker is

Atom Splitter's Pulsation
Not overtly complex for a basic substacrive synth, but it has some interesting presets and if you are so inclined to spend the time to edit you can easily make some sonic monsters.
It comes with 4 pulse waves which can be independently mod'ed or LFO'ed... the filter is just ok on its own, but the clip and saturation features are unnecessarily ugly. It is possible to get a fat sound with the de-tune, but the real gravy of this soft synth lies in the filter manipulation and saturation.
Another fantastic free VST synth is the MiniMogueVA from the Voltkitchen Group

Pretty faithful representation of the origianl look and sound but this has tons of additional features not present on the original Mini: like 5-note polyphony, an Arpeggiator, Step Sequencer, Release knobs for the two Contour Generators, Fine Tuning sliders for Osc2 and Osc3, Aftertouch control, adjustable filter Velocity curve, 3 independent Overdrive sliders, Global Overdrive, Oscillator Sync, Chorus, an independent LFO that includes oscillator drift and stereo panning, and a fully programmable Digital Delay! Like the original Mini, you can turn Osc3 into an LFO with dedicated modulation for the Osc Pitch and the Filter. There is no dedicated Noise Generator as on the original Mini, but pink and white noise are selectable on Osc 3. All controls are mapped to MIDI. If you can't make noize with this go work at Chucky Cheeze cuz you suck.
